Robert Furey

Robert Furey (he/him) is an Irish-Jamaican writer and director of theatre and film. Whether creating bold original work or reinterpreting classics, Furey makes work that imaginatively tackles contemporary issues of gender, class and race from an intersectional perspective informed by his cultural background. In addition to directing both new and established writing, he has developed his own methodology to create devised theatre for use with non-professional performers.

Robert holds a master’s degree in directing from LAMDA and has staged work in the UK and abroad in Ireland, Greece and the USA. He is the most recent recipient of the Royal Exchange Theatre’s Hodgkiss Award for emerging directors and worked as an assistant director at the Exchange on Ntombizodwa Nyoni’s Liberation and on the ceremony for the Bruntwood Prize for Playwriting.

As a playwright he’s currently under commission by Beyond Face and was a selected participant in Smock Alley’s Baptiste Programme for Black-Irish writers.

He’s excited for the upcoming year working with Headlong and the other Origins directors.
